Diplomático alemán. Ingresó al servicio diplomático en 1903 y se desempeñó como representante de su país ante Dinamarca (1919–22) y embajador ante Italia (1922–30) y Gran Bretaña (1930–32). Como ministro de asuntos exteriores de Alemania (1932–38), dio respetabilidad a la política exterior expansionista de
Adolf Hitler. Como "protector de Bohemia y Moravia (1939–41), fue acusado de ser demasiado indulgente y fue reemplazado por
Reinhard Heydrich. Después de la segunda guerra mundial, fue enjuiciado y encarcelado por crímenes de guerra (
1946–54).
